It's a beautiful night at 39 degrees. I have finally finished packing and dispersing all the lovely unwanted items to my fun Webster gal pals. It's been a stressful packing time. I've accumulated much more than anticipated so figuring out how to get it all home has been difficult. My parents have graciously paid for boxes to be shipped home and I bought one more luggage that two children could fit in. It's not even half way full because of weight regulations, but it's still ginormous. My room is empty and walls are again bare. I can't believe it has been six months since they were last like this. Seems like just last week.

I am sad to leave the city. It has been a amazing time and I am grateful for everything I have experienced. I will miss the friends I have made here, and that favorite spot in Central Park, walking along the Hudson, and Burgers and Cupcakes where I often ate. However, I am ready to come home. I miss my family and my friends and all those comforts of being home. It's been a whirlwind of emotions these last few days.

Thank you all for reading my blog (when I would remember to post) and for keeping me in you thoughts and prayers. I truly appreciate it. I don't know what's to come next for me, but I'm excited to see happens next. I know it's going to be great.

With one final farewell from New York City,

Goodnight and God bless.

Colors of New York

Last Sunday we had one of the most beautiful fall days. The sun was out and it was a brisk 54 degrees outside. A friend of mine lent me her bike-in-a-bag for the weekend. Yes, you read it right. Bike-in-a-bag. You see, we are not allowed to keep bikes in our rooms because of their size. They are a fired hazard I guess. Well, Margaret decided she would get one of those fold-up bikes and then she could keep it in her room. Cleaver, yes? She's also the one who lived here 30 years ago and used to go rollerskating on the roof. Do we see a pattern here?

Anyways, I was grateful to take the bike out for a spin. I went up the Hudson bike path, across the Upper East Side over into Central Park, all around inside and the water, and then back again home the same way. Three hours and some 10 odd miles later, I was sore. I did, however, get some nice pictures of beautiful New York color. (The slideshow is a little odd and will only show you one new photo at a time before it goes through the entire thing again. Sorry. There are a little over 20 photos, so stay with it)

The Benefit is Over!

Two days ago was Aperture's 2008 Benefit and Auction. This is the big event I have been helping plan since I arrived at my internship. It also was the major task of my entire internship and now everything we do is on a much smaller scale. Well it was a long day starting early in the morning with packing up supplies and getting them over to the benefit location, Pier 60. I was positioned at Aperture all day answering phone calls and emails. There was a slight communication issue and we realized that we had no wall labels for the art work for the silent auction. I took this task and proceeded to follow a template to create 60 wall labels. This sounds easy, but it really took me quite a long time make sure everything was spelled correctly and all the sizes and prices were correct. In the end, we only used 9 of the labels for the live auction pieces. Come 3:45pm, I was the only one left in the development department and everyone had headed over the event sight. I was very excited that everyone had enough confidence in me to have me take the phone calls and emails. However, I had no idea how many there would be. I was watching over all three development phones and emails and there were a lot of last minute changes that needed to be made. In the end, I think I did all right.

Once I arrived at Pier 60, I met with the event coordinator and we worked with the seating list to accommodate the changes. This became a frequent thing as many people showed who weren't on the list and people brought guest they shouldn't have and other wanted to make changes to their tables and on and on and on. I had no idea working the registration table would be so much work. It was two hours of standing, running around, finding people, making changes with my director, talking to dinner staff and having them make more seating placements, making more changes with the event staff, and more. I learned quite a lot. After everyone was ushered into the dinning area, then the take down work began. We needed to get all the artwork down, and all the bid sheets over to the winners tables, and getting all the supplies out of the way to pack all the art. There was also the tasks make sure the staff wasn't getting drunk in front of the guests, and reminding spotters when and where they needed to be for the live auction portion of the evening. Quite a busy evening. Everything from here was pretty much smooth sailing. I had to kick out a few reporters who were hanging around longer than they should have, talk to a few people about the auction items they bid on, gently remind the staff they should be working and not standing around chatting, and grab a little something to eat in the process.

Overall, it was a really fun evening. I feel as if I learned a lot, especially about seating arrangements, and did a really good job doing my job. I received a lot of personal praise for the work I was doing and being on top of things. Of course, I also got to told to slow down and remember to breath a lot too. I remembered to say hi to many of the board members and co-chairs of the evening and to people I will be working with shortly for upcoming events next month. And on a personal note, for those who remember the fabulous two inch heels I bought for the event, I kept them on all evening (except for a few mins here and there) and I don't even have blisters the morning after. Quite an accomplishment if I do say so myself.
We finally got out of there at about midnight and three of us when to go meet two of my friends as a nearby pub. When we walked in we were very surprised to find that about ten of our other staff members had also decide to head to the pub. It was a little odd so we sat on our own. We had a nice relaxing hour just to sit and chat about the night. So to sum it up, it was a long day/night of hard work, fun, and fantastic fashion. Thanks for all the prayers and warm wishes for the night.

Obviously I had no time to take photos, but I will post some when I get some from work.

Sweaters, Scarves & Hats Oh My!

For those of you who are still in the 90 degree weather, you maybe be unaware that fall is indeed here. It came suddenly to us here in New York. We had a cool week in the 60s then it sprung back up to 70s and humidity and then suddenly overnight, fall came. We have been in a constant 50s weather. I'm wearing scarves and sweaters and thick socks. What a difference from an Arizona fall. I am absolutely loving it!

Hoboken:

Hoboken, NJ is one of the best kept secrets to the tourist of New York. But for those of us who live here day in and day out, it is one of our favorite weekend retreats. The minute you step out of the train you shoulders relax and you breath deeper. You walk down the streets and hear the strange noises of birds chirping and can walk in a straight line again; no more dodging and weaving. The New York skyline is amazing and there is a proper, clean, very large Target with a Starbucks inside; a wonderful reminder of what home is like.
There are wonderful little restaurants, which is very similar to Manhattan. On this particular visit we ate at Gharrito's. Got that last table in the place. Delicious!
The train station is old fashion reminds you of something straight out of a Harry Potter movie. It's a great place to visit.
<img style="cursor:pointer; I took a long weekend and made the 5 hour flight home.
It was great to visit my family and home. It was especially fun showing up at random places and surprising people who didn't know I was home. I didn't really tell people I was coming so I could have some freedom to relax. I really need to relax because now I am in the last 9 days before my big benefit at work and everyone is on GO GO GO mode. But it's exciting. I'm having a great time.

I have also been given a event of my own that will take place next month. It's bigger than the last one I was given. This time, nothing has been done for the event and I have to start everything. I'm excited for the challenge. I have to send the invites out by Friday though. So it's a bit of a crunch with everything going on for the benefit next week.

The weather had turned cooler here. Last week it was in the 60's but this week we are having a bit of an "Indian summer". It's just beautiful! Makes me wish I didn't have to be in an office all day long. This weekend, I finally walked across the Brooklyn Bridge (Brooklyn to Manhattan, the best way to walk). Emma and I went and then ate some soft serve ice cream at then end. It was great!
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SPQZNUYAAkI/AAAAAAAAAQM/g18_zhuDfXw/s200/IMG_0126_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256854381646578242" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SPQZvDa7_MI/AAAAAAAAAQU/Vw4tLauGPWI/s200/IMG_0134.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256854961211047106" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SPQaIthEYcI/AAAAAAAAAQc/gEbOlDNuJus/s200/IMG_0143.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256855402007781826" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SPQaWQi-dGI/AAAAAAAAAQk/JCbUquvfxSw/s200/SL383923.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256855634749322338" />

Erin and I went out to Rockaway Beach on Sunday. It's in Queens. And let me tell you, this was a PERFECT beach day; just a slight chill in the breeze, a practically empty beach, soft sand, and a kite. Yes, we flew a kite on the beach. It was just wonderful and it was great to finally get to hang with Erin. We've only seen each other about three times since we both moved here, so it was great to spend the afternoon together.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SPQYAtFGJGI/AAAAAAAAAPs/UWguKkBHztc/s200/IMG_0206.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256853065428247650" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SPQYYLUw1eI/AAAAAAAAAP0/vJruaWHvpJg/s200/IMG_0201.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256853468684015074" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SPQYlZhuePI/AAAAAAAAAP8/VtQgxymgPjw/s200/IMG_0212.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256853695834781938" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SPQYzV0iM9I/AAAAAAAAAQE/5H-Oct4Fs5E/s200/IMG_0237.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256853935358096338" />

A few of the girls in my building have had visitors for the past week. So we've all been doing lots and lots of things. Last night, we went and had dinner at the first pizzeria in the entire continental United States- Lombardi's. It was soooo good. It's located right on the edge of Little Italy. Afterward we went for a drink in Soho. It was lots of fun.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SPQbLAPnuxI/AAAAAAAAAQ0/hi8AMVGbrrI/s200/IMG_0268.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256856540906240786" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SPQbZaZVsUI/AAAAAAAAAQ8/nseDHsr49ws/s200/IMGP4104.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256856788444492098" /> The Whole Lot Of Us <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SPQaz9xHq2I/AAAAAAAAAQs/Br64kTju1v0/s200/IMG_0257_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256856145104448354" /> EMMA <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SPQb6yHvzXI/AAAAAAAAARE/iRo7aiRYSDc/s200/IMGP4103.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256857361748839794" /> Morgan & (visiting boyfriend) Mat <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SPQcLsoCPwI/AAAAAAAAARM/LyYLzPNUvAc/s200/IMGP4105.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256857652331429634" /> Sophie

On Thursday, two of the ladies from my group are flying home; Sophie and Morgan. The crew took over for or five blocks around where I work. It was fun. And, as an added bonus, Lindsay Lohon happened to making a guest appearance. And just as she was walking from her trailer I happened to be walking by her trailer. I didn't even know who it was, I just saw constant flash of bulbs from cameras. It was pretty funny to have her just walk by me. Here is a video clip from the filming and a pic of Lindsay.
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v2.nonxt2.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Dd2731d0187fc3c66%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331611659%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D271148BB0B22CA6D2E520A64E5413DAD04570893.7C961CE713CD47B11E4AD9805B8F597142B2E4F9%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Dd2731d0187fc3c66%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DTFiAziSADhvtkRr5xIl6Wa7feGU&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Governors Island
Last week we had the most beautiful Sunday. Unlike today when you feel like you walk into a sauna once out your front door. Naparna, a friend from India, and I took the ferry to Governors Island. The island is located at the n tip of Manhattan. On this particular Sunday, they had free bike riding, kite flying, and mini golf. Naparna had never flown a kite before and hasn't ridden a bike since a young age. We arrived early, on the second ferry of the day. Went right away to get our bikes before the queue got really long and were off! We road around for awhile, found the kites, road some more, returned the bikes, tried to fly the kite with just breeze (didn't work so well), and then headed home. It was such a nice time.
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v21.nonxt7.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D64a617c6e751a811%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331611659%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D1322A19CA23716F995DAE9214CF2E5B0B7D43F6B.3ECCB98FAE465642AB5401F349B2EDB44A5A643A%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D64a617c6e751a811%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DBItEpDLhTxVLJUgthbqspsLWOK0&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Labour Day Weekend

Saturday:
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SMRD3P2XyOI/AAAAAAAAAN0/cRc9vJ573Vg/s200/CIMG1255.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5243390482592549090" />Last weekend Aspen and Doug Blanchard came to New York City to see the sights and take in a Yankees game. I had a chance to meet up with them for a few short hours. We went Macy's, walked up 5th Ave. and went to Tiffany's, the NBA store, the Apple Store, and the Disney Store. Sadly it was the first muggy day we have had in weeks, but it wasn't so bad. It was only for a few hours but it was very nice to friends from home.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SMREvbAMFaI/AAAAAAAAAN8/FaOzLOwwHx8/s200/CIMG1259.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5243391447659189666" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SMRFDGGqHVI/AAAAAAAAAOE/IxdZsJ0N9Jw/s200/CIMG1256.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5243391785646562642" />

Afterward, I went to meet Mariam and Sabine at an apartment Mariam is cat sitting at. You can see the skyline from West side and it is beautiful. There is an art piece up around the East side River. They are three freestanding waterfalls and soon will be taken down forever.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SNMWdD2qsOI/AAAAAAAAAO0/zIWdr9EqguE/s200/CIMG1333.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247562679323373794" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SNMWz0-D36I/AAAAAAAAAO8/p8iOh78lLqo/s200/CIMG1330.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247563070464843682" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SNMXN0sMS8I/AAAAAAAAAPE/_Rv6d0KYYL4/s200/CIMG1360.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247563517066496962" />
We stopped by a lovely little coffeehouse and had a corn muffin and Italian soda. And only bought a book. I went into Strand Books and spent at least an hour going through all the used books and being in complete awe at how many books there are on Feng Shui. It was great. I bought a book about Ronald Reagan. I met Sabine in Little Italy for dinner and we shared two dishes. Monday's work day went by very quickly. The development assistant was away visiting family and so there was more work for the interns to do. On my way home I picked up a bottle of California wine for after dinner. A handful of us met on the roof and enjoy a glass or two and talked about everything and nothing. It was a chilly night. We had sweaters and summer scarves on. We also decided to take some fun photos...
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SLYQidtggTI/AAAAAAAAAMs/lpltMimdKaE/s320/CIMG1186.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239393400769249586" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SLYP_zZpCNI/AAAAAAAAAMc/FPcGl3h5n3g/s320/CIMG1177.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239392805296081106" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SLYQW9iPgwI/AAAAAAAAAMk/FIdKuR8XeIA/s320/CIMG1183.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239393203153502978" />

On Tuesday, <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SLYTbCOUqyI/AAAAAAAAAM0/SLv-1xje6VA/s200/CIMG1196.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239396571666492194" />we decided to get manicures and pedicures. This decision came from some free nail polish Mariam had received from a Webster girl who was moving out. It was Victoria Secret brand so we all put some on. The next day, it had all ready started to flake off! We decided it must have been a fake one and came to the conclusion that we just needed to get our nails done professionally. Non of them had gotten a mani/pedi before, so I researched the Internet, high and low mind you, to find the best bang for our buck. <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SLYT9tWehdI/AAAAAAAAAM8/MZdEQJGpwuQ/s200/CIMG1192.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239397167358969298" />Clover Nails was the winner with $31 for mani and pedi with vibrating chairs and later hours. When we arrived, there were six women waiting for us. They spent the next hour doing all our nails. These ladies were SO nice and efficient and the owner, Soon even remembered my name when I left. Well, she either remembered it or looked back in the reservation book to see what it was. Either way, I was impressed by her effort. Everyone loved their nails, especially Sabine who could not believe how nice her toes look. It was great and I'm so glad they enjoyed the experience. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SLYUd0ce8RI/AAAAAAAAANE/ttwUSzXlbRk/s200/CIMG1203.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239397719019024658" />

Now it's Wednesday and time for some quite. Ruth and I are sitting in my room writing in our journals. Although hers is actually with pen and paper. I'm quite impressed with how much she has written these past two months. Much more dedicated than I.

I've been hearing stories about people starting school this week. The freshman who are experiencing their first days of college, the seniors who are having their last first days, and the graduate students who are in new places. With me not partaking this year, I have to say, it doesn't really feel odd like I have imagined. I think it was finally time for me to be done and I'm grateful that I feel that way now as I'm experiencing it. Granted, I do miss my classmates and "being in college", but I am ready to move on. It was time to change that chapter and start this one and it feels pretty good. I appreciate all I had in college, the friends I met, the memories I made, and even the education I received. However, the thought of all the waits me is far more exhilarating.

Last Week/end in Photos

Thursday:
Baby shower! Undoubtedly, everyone asks what I am doing here and after I tell them I'm on an internship here till December, the immediately ask what I plan to do afterward. Well I still have no idea, so I tell them, "I have no idea". So they ask, will you stay here or go back home? Again, I don't know and respond with such an answer.

With having this line of conversation coming up more recently, it started me thinking, "well why don't I know yet"? "Why do I still have no idea?" This of course led me to more questions about why God sent me here and what I am supposed to learn and if I'm really getting what I'm supposed to be getting out of this experience etc. etc. etc. Then, I had an epiphany.

I was preparing a surprise gift for a friend back home and I was so excited because I know she's going to love it when she finally gets it. I thought about telling her to look for it in the mail, but then I thought that it would be such a better surprise and she would enjoy it much more when she got it, if she didn't know it was coming. Just as this thought finished, it occurred to me that maybe this is how God works.

If He told me now what He has planned for me after these six months, would it be as exciting as if I found out when I'm really supposed to? No! Of course not! It's like knowing about a Christmas present early. Sure you're excited when you first find out about it, but then you can't have it till Christmas. Then, when you actually open it, the surprise and most of the excitement is gone because you already knew what it was.

And, furthermore, I know my friend is going to be so surprised and so excited and love it so much, so why would I do something that would take that away from her? Why would I tell her something now that would cause her less joy in the future when she just doesn't really need to know now? Why would He?

I guess my point is, I can wait for the surprise. I trust it's going to be more exciting then I can imagine.

Updates!

Wow, I'm getting a bit behind on these entries. My apologies, but I have good reasons!!!

Friends:
I have finally met some ladies in my building. To make a long story short, I went to a UN party with one of the ladies in my building (not in the actual building but the German House in UN square). A few of other ladies, who are here from Germany, went as well. The next night, we all ate dinner together and we met more ladies; one from Canada, Kentucky, and Scotland. Yesterday, I went with five of the German ladies to Korean Way and we had an authentic Korean dinner. Yum! It was hard for the Germans to understand the Koreans when they spoke English, so I had to translate. It's so nice to finally have people to eat with and talk to during meals.

Work:
The past week I have had to travel 45mins each way to go pick up these letters at a residence off of Park Ave. I had to go three times because the first two times, the papers were not there. The address of the building is 740 E Park Ave. Why am I telling you this? Because this place is so ritzy and lavishing, it had a book written about! I was not aloud to take pictures, but man,you should have seen it. Google it and you will see. Here is a link to a New York Times article about it: ARTICLE
We are preparing for our re-opening in September. The walls are all done and now the templates for the pictures are going on the walls. They put up actual size papers of the pictures with a sticky back on the walls to see how everything will look. And to make adjustments where necessary.

Play:
One of my new favorite things to do in NYC is run in the rain. It's a like a whole new place during the rain. No one is on the streets, the lights all shine even more because they reflect off the water, and the noise drowns out a bit from the sound of rain falling. I ran all the way down to SOHO and Greenwich Village a few days ago. This is where I would live if I could. Such cute homes and brick laid streets. I absolutely love it.
I finally got a chance to hang with my friend Erin (she moved here from AZ just a few weeks before I did). We went and saw The Goonies at Pier 46(same thing I did for Wizard of Oz). Then we walked down to Batty Park. It is so amazing at night with all the tourist gone and the NJ city line in the distance. Then we took the Long Island Ferry across the Hudson. It is free and goes in front of the Statue of Liberty. We spent the night at her place and slept till 11am. It was soooooo nice to finally sleep in and still be able to have breakfast! We made pancakes and coffee. It was a lovely lazy Saturday.

Filming on the NY Streets

Today was a rather dull long day. The air did not work in the office for the morning. To me, this was music. I sit right in front of the AC unit, and get the most air than anyone AND I get the breeze of the air out of the gallery. So this morning, I was only get the gallery breeze and loved it! Then they fixed it. And I froze again. And I barely had work to do. So slow day. I did, however, get a chance to get to know one of my other interns better. And we haven't really connected, but she really opened up over our lunch brake. So that was actually a great part of my work day.

After work I went to go check out this boutique that makes button down ladies shirts that are personally fitted. They were have a massive sale to were even I could afford a shirt or two. <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SJkcxCnvpgI/AAAAAAAAAIg/7nxkQKJ_1sA/s320/08-05-08_1813.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231244071010280962" />I got there and it was packed. I'll have to try again tomorrow maybe. The best part was though...that I saw the set of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit!!!!
I saw Christopher Melone (Det. Elliot Stabler) from a distance. I walked around the set to see if I could get a better look. It was even worse. I was meeting a friend for dinner so I decided to take out my map and see where I was. When I looked up, Mariska Hargitay (Det. Oliva Benson) was walking right pasted me. I smiled really big and said hi. She smiled back and said hi. It seemed like she was in a big hurry to get on set. But it was way cool!
Since I'm going back to the store tomorrow, maybe they will still be filming and I can take my camera for better photos, instead of these from my camera phone. <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SJkc_ozbykI/AAAAAAAAAIo/PySKmKKeeJc/s320/08-05-08_1812.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231244321778027074" />
I walked the 20 some blocks home today from dinner. It is just so beautiful outside today and tonight. The breeze is actually chilly. I needed to put something on over my tank top. So nice! (In case I forgot to mention her, I went to school with Ellena. She was offered an apartment for a month for free in NYC so she decided to take it. And who wouldn't?!?) We left on a 2:30 bus. Two other girls we went to school with were/are in Philly. Korbi is in an internship there over the summer and Caitie was visiting her for the week. We met-up with Caitie while Korbi was working. We grabbed some food and then went to a bar where Ellena and Caitie got champagne and Pop Rocks. It was the funniest thing I've ever seen. The Pop Rocks would pop out and hit Ellena in the eye. We also played some Jenga.
We met Korbi back at the apartment where caught up a bit. It was good to hang with old friends from home. It felt like a just another evening back in AZ. Soon after we headed out on the town. We hit up a few clubs and bars and finally ended up back at home around 3am.

Since we were out so late, we slept till noon. Once up, we were starving. We grabbed a cab and went to the Italian district for some authentic Italian food. It was amazing! And, it was actually a place where the real Rocky used to eat. They had stuff all over the walls about him. We walked around for a bit, then decided to grab some coffee and french toast at a very cute local place. It was soooooooo good.
By this time, most of the day was gone. We hopped in another cab and headed back by the apartment were we met up with my friend Genevieve!

(Gen had business in Delaware and New Jersey so she decided to pick me and Ellena up and drive us back to NY and hang out with me before she needed to go to NJ)
We all went and got some cheese steaks at one of the most famous places, Jim's off of South street. We waited for 30mins then took our food on the road. Gen is now in love with cheese steaks and cheese whiz.

We went to NJ first and dropped Gen's rental car off at the hotel she was staying at on Sunday night and took the train into the city. Gen stayed with me at my place. It was fun showing her where I live and all the fun features of my place. Good to have someone new to share it with.

Next morning we went to a church that I am starting to attend and then we met her friend Sharon for brunch. We went to this very popular place off of Amsterdam. The food was amazing, but we had to wait a little while to get seated. We popped into Sharon's place then headed to Ground Zero so Gen could see it before she left. We went to St. Paul's Chapel and the walkway were you can see the construction. It was sad to finally take Gen to the train station to head back to NJ, but we had such a great time together.

My weekend, however, did not end there. Monday night, Gabe was back in town. Ellena and I went over to his brother's condo for dinner. Gabe brother is in construction is currently working on the new bulidings for Columbia University and Ground Zero. His company is paying for him and his wife to live in a condo on the 34th floor of a high rise. Great view of the Hudson and sunset from up there. For dinner, Gabe handmade lasagna. It was really really good.
Afterward, we all went to a famous jazz club called Bird Land. Many well known names have played there, like Dizzy, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and Lester Young to name a few. On Monday nights they have what they call, Jim Caruso's Cast Party. This is when current or past or future Broadway singers come and sing. All you need is sheet music to give to the musicians (or just a napkin with notes on it) and you can get up on stage and sing. If you are currently on Broadway or off Broadway, this is great time to plug in your play and network with other professionals. There was incredible talent there on Monday night. One of my favorites was a man who is currently playing the chef on the Broadway production of The Little Mermaid. He was also in The Producers. He was funny.

It was such a fun night/weekend. :D

There is a slideshow of pictures from the weekend below, but you can also go here: http://www.castpartynyc.com/ and click on Pix to see more photos of Monday night's Cast Party (7/28/2008)

Jeffery's & Red Mango

Yesterday I went out with one of my fellow interns, Julia, after work. She mentioned that her mother shops there and absolutely loves it. Of course, I have never heard of it so she decided to show me what it was all about.
We step in the door as the doorman holds it for us, we proceed to the Chanel makeup counter. The very nice gentleman behind the counter talks to Julia about makeup and he convinces us to let him "freshen up" our faces. We looked like movie stars. Julia bought a mascara and eyeliner. Then we go further into the store to look at shoes. We of course browse the sale racks. $400 as the average price, and at 70% too. What a steal! (cough)
Upon leaving I glance at Julia and she asked me what I thought. I told her I had never even touched shoes that were that much! She laugh with glee. She says she is going to corrupt me with designers and high priced fashion.
On to the little store where I bought nothing but really like it. Very cute and hip. This was apparently a very ritzy place to be. Next came Red Mango.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SIpBimqVuTI/AAAAAAAAAIU/kRuopCarE2g/s320/07-24-08_1857.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5227062380266371378" />If you have ever heard of Pinkberry, this is basically the same thing. It's all the rage here and lines are out the door at Pinkberry no matter when you go. It's not frozen yogurt, but yogurt that is frozen. Are you understanding the difference? So it's healthier for you. I had strawberries and dark Ghirardelli chocolate in mine. She had mango, gramcraker and something else I can't remember. I must say, I now totally understand what all the fuss is about. I highly recommend it for the tummy, but not necessarily for the wallet.

Gabe's Visit & Subverting the Empire!

On Monday night I hung out with a friend of a friend. His name is Gabe. His brother lives here and he has family all around this area in upstate New York so he's here for a few weeks. It was fun to see someone from back home. We grabbed some Starbucks and walked around the park for a bit. We tried to go into F.A.O. Schwartz (which btw he had never heard of!!), but alas it was closed. So, we took a really strange photo instead....
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SIlWmBUv1_I/AAAAAAAAAIE/BBQiRS50P-Q/s320/CIMG0702.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226804053730646002" />
We're going to open mic night at a famous jazz club next Monday. It's gonna be awesome! No I will not be partaking in the singing portion.

Yesterday was defiantly one of those days where you just feel God.

For lunch I went and got food with two of my fellow interns and we went and sat in a park. We were discussing about our evening plans and I told them I was to a discussion about being an artist and a Christian in a secular world. Little did I know that this was going to open whole bunch of questions. To my surprise, the two were very interested in what my faith was and how it affected my decisions. We touched on everything from abortion, to gay marriage, to drinking. I know it's strange, but no one has ever actually asked me questions after I casually mention church or that I'm a Christian. I have many nonbeliever friends, but they have just never been interested like this before. Overall I think our conversation went well. They didn't always agree with what I said, but they listened. It was very cool and I'm glad I got a chance to talk with them about my faith. One of them had actually never met someone who lives their life by their faith.

On my way home from work, I got the text message from Josh saying how his father's cancer had spread through his brain. Operating is no longer an option and chemo is the next step. All the mean while construction has stared on their home. This family has been through so much and my heart just breaks for them and I don't like that I can't be there. But God is sovereign and His plan is perfect. Now we just have to wait and pray.

After dinner I went to the artist discussion. I heard about it on Sunday at church. It was called Subverting the Empire Through Art. I thought about not going. Thinking I was tired and little sick, but I forced myself to go. Saying I need to meet more believers and I need good fellowship. As I went to the building, I didn't even think about the location of the address off 5th Avenue. Until I approached the building and it hit me, this is 5th Avenue. There was a door man dressed to the nines, a gentleman at a desk inside, and gentleman in each elevator. Once we reached the 38th floor, he showed me to the door of the apartment. As I walked in I felt so out of place, but you know, acted like I belonged. Said hi to a few people and to JR (the pastor who I met on Sunday). I noticed a few people looking out the panoramic windows so I went for a glance. You could see central park and up around the whole city. It was amazing and beautiful.
There were about 14 of us who went. For almost two hours we talked about what we as artist could do, to help send a different message to the city then all the negative ones we see everywhere. We talked about the city needs and what contradicts the norm. We picked a central theme of Hope and Relationships. Each of us is now to brainstorm how we can use our gifts to spread this message. We're going to meet in two weeks and see what we came up with.
It was great to meet some new people and have fellowship with believes. I left so encouraged and with the names of people. Now I'll have someone to sit next to on Sunday. I'm glad God put it on my heart to go.

Last Weekend

You know how when someone asks you about your weekend and what you did you indubitably forget what you did? And it's not like it was last month or even last week, but just one whole day. The mind plays tricks I tell you. Well I was asked this question a few times since Sunday and I all I could remember was the stomachache I got Sunday night and hasn't really gone away. On a more exciting note, however, I did attend a photography conference for a good part of my Sunday.

PhotoShelter is a third party stock photo website. They also hold random things that bring photographers together with professionals in the field of photography, photojournalism, and editorials. So we bascially met for an event called "Shoot! The Day". While professionals and amateur (what I went to) met for dialogs, lectures, and a trade show, photographers all over the world were putting together pictures of "much needed shots" for stock photos. The idea was to improve the quality and art expression of stock photography. It was free and I got a free tote. I learned a lot about editorials and what kind of website you should have and not have. Plus free snacks and flavored water. All in all, a good Sunday afternoon.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SIlOs2lEUdI/AAAAAAAAAH0/WtzDRYSqy3E/s320/CIMG0681.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226795375012368850" />

Then I went to a try a new church. My friend Kerry and her roommate attend. It is called Apostles Church. It is much smaller than Redeemer and has a bit of a younger crowd. I like it a lot and the girl who I sat next to actually talked to me after the service. I went and got a cup of lemonade and a tiny cupcake and went to sit in a nearby park. The weather was so nice. As I was walking, I ran into Vincent D'Onofrio (one of the detectives on Law & Order CI and he was Edger in Men in Black), well almost ran into him. I was looking at my cupcake. I started to smile because I recognized him and I quickly looked down at the two dogs he was walking. They were delicious. But I forgot to take a photo. Next, we proceeded to walk to St. Marks Square to grab food for Eila. There were a ton of people out (as if you were expecting anything else than from NYC on a Friday night). St. Marks Square, Eila informed me, used to be more punkish. Now it has turned posh with a ton of little expensive food joints and shops. However, there are, on occasion the surprising places.....

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SIKusDAH9fI/AAAAAAAAAHc/TQVkBqmrzYg/s320/CIMG0672.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5224930589446501874" /><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SIKu_1zx1TI/AAAAAAAAAHk/FHM4idf8Zk0/s320/CIMG0671.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5224930929502442802" /><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SIKvPRcr7hI/AAAAAAAAAHs/zF7hOrT3ErA/s320/CIMG0670.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5224931194619817490" />

No, your eyes do not deceive you. Those are burgers from a vending machine. There are actually three types of items from the vending machine. Red, yellow, and green. Red are the burgers, yellow are the side dishes, and green are the healthy alternatives. Everything is made fresh from the back, and then slid into each little slot through a door in the back of each window. When you put your money in, the window opens and presto! We did not eat here, but continued on to an Israeli restaurant. It was 11pm and they had just opened and are open till 4am, when the bars actually close.

PS- Thank for all the letters! It took me one week living in my apartment to realize my window can go up, and the top windowpane can come down. It was down about two inches for that entire first week. I no longer sleep with earplugs.

2. It took me two weeks to realize that even though my curtain holders don't open so I pull my curtains shut, I can actually pull the curtains out of the holders to close them. My room is substantially darker in the mornings now.

3. I've been here three weeks and have now just realized that my backyard is actually about twice its size. There is a very tall wall on one side that has a opening. On the other side is whole other area with benches and a garden and even a little birdbath.

4. Today I spent the whole day in my room watching movies and playing online. It took me till 3pm to realize my fan had been on low all day and that is probably why it wasn't as cool as I thought it should be.

Day 21: New E.D.

So today we had a cocktail reception to introduce our new executive director to our patrons and people in the art community. I got to borrow someones digital rebel and photograph the event for Aperture. This was a private event but unfortunately there was a gallery opening on the 3rd floor, so we had some unwelcome guests. Including a guy who threw a cup on the floor and mumbled obscenities when i asked him to leave. We also had a group of four who lied about knowing someone at the event, but they bought a book from the store, so we forgave them. I'm sure they drank more than the cost of the book though. People are strange.
Now in anticipation of a long night, I traded my dinner meal ticket for a lunch one and this way preventing having to purchase both lunch and dinner. Ad of course in do so, forgetting today was my day to watch the front desk. Well not so much forgetting as writing down the wrong date in my calendar. Yeah, so I ended up buying lunch and then grab a totally greasy gyro from a street vendor on the way. The two owners were such nice guys. I think I'll buy from them again.
During the event, I got a chance to meet a lot of our patrons and members of the board. This one man, Celso, I am absolutely in love with. He is about 80 years old and has been with Aperture for a very long time. I've met him once before when I dropped off some papers for his signature at his residence (Upper East between Park and Lexington thank you very much). Tomorrow him and his wife leave for Paris on vacation.

(See slide show for photos)

Sylvia Plachy

The other night I got a chance to work a book lecture and signing at the public library. Sylvia Plachy was the artist. One of the sweetest ladies you will ever meet. She is so down to earth and friendly. She's one of those folks you could just sit with and talk to for hours. Sylvia was the first photographer ever to be commissioned by The New Yorker for its Going About Town section or GOAT. She as has also worked for The Village Voice (for 30 yrs!) and The New York Magazine. There were over 100 people in attendance. We sold out of books.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SH-KXKpvA3I/AAAAAAAAAHU/_oxAle8h_eM/s320/images.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5224046223374091122" />Here is a picture of her and her son. She also worked the lecture. She is lots of fun! We grabbed a bite to eat after and went to sit in Bryant Park. As it should happen, HBO was starting its movie in the park night. Fail Safe was the first movie. We stayed and watch a bit before we parted our separate ways. I'm sad that Ester will be leaving at the end of the month. She starts at Yale in the fall.

Day 14 & 15

Friday:
Some would say that New York City is one of the best places in the world. Of course I proceeded to get inline and join the crowd. As I am waiting with all the mob who should walk by into the building? Kathy Lee Gifford. I immediately told two peole and before you know it we had a group of 5 of us going. I woke-up and made the trek out to Queens. My excitement was short lived when I arrived at my stop and found I had left my directions at home. I couldn't even ask anyone where it was because I couldn't remember the name of the store.

Called two people. No answer. Walked to where I thought it might be. Got a hold of Erin and she looked up the address for me and gave me directions from where I was. Long story short, I was over a mile off and an hour and a half late to when I wanted to be there. Turns out, non of the 4 other could make it.

The warehouse can be described in one word: insane! There were bins FULL of clothes, clothes on the floor, people walking on clothes, people tossing clothes. No ac either. Just one fan. I mean this place was a disaster. So, I grabbed a bag and hopped on in. (The gist is you can get whatever you can cram into a brown bag for $20) By the time I was done, nothing on me was clean, including my purse. It was nasty but totally worth it. In the end I had 26 things including labels such as Gap, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, United Colors of Britain, Forever 21, American Eagle, and BCBG MaxArizona. And two of my personal favorites, a Ralph Lauren silk scarf and a vintage TWA messenger bag. All for $20 people! Totally work the frustration getting there.

I worked for a few hours then did some stuff at home before I headed out for the Bon Jovi concert. Now he was giving a free concert in Central Park, however you needed to get a ticket to get in the gates. I didn't have one. But they can't close the entire park. So, like many other genesis New Yorkers, I got as close as I could to hear him. I took a book, some snacks and just listened to him sing in the background as the night got cooler and the sun went down. It was a lovely evening. As a side note for those who don't know, there are lighting bugs in the park during the summer :)

Day 13: First Aperture Event/Luigi

Well since the water was going to be turned off, I got the morning off. I went in about 1pm, only to see all the other interns leave for lunch. No bother. I got the morning off :) I didn't do much today. Sent out some press announcements (took me three tries because they have a particular way of writing their letters) and updated an address list.
We had a corporate event held tonight in our gallery. One of our board members works at a law firm and so they held their annual spring reception. I basically sat behind the counter by the books in case anyone wanted to buy something. Even though I didn't know how/what to do if someone wanted to buy something. The development assistant was also there. And I ate the food and had a berry mojito. And I got paid extra for doing it.
The development assistant and I had to lock-up. We waited till the caters to cleanup and leave. Well, we were about to leave and realized we could not find Luigi. Luigi and Walker are our two cats. We have cats to keep the mice out. Luigi is a very social cat, so it's not like him to not be around the only people left in the building. We looked for that stupid cat for 20 mins. I finally went and looked by the back stock of the books, and I bent down and called his name and all of the sudden "MEOW!". I jumped sky high let me tell you. And Luigi just comes walking out like he hadn't been hiding. Stupid cat.

Behind the counter look as the party calms down
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SHV1bskHuwI/AAAAAAAAAGM/YiXLl60H3KA/s320/07-09-08_1947.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221208461685537538" />

PS- Water was turned on again by 4:30pm. I woke-up early so I could take my time. However, in doing so I lost track of time. Left for work 10 mins before I had to be there. Great way to start, I know. But for those of you who don't know, I am only a 10 min walk from work. And I jogged a bit, so I got there in about 6 mins. Only to find out, I bet everyone else there including my intern supervisor. We didn't actually meet until 40 mins later. I so did not need to be there on time.
There are 11 interns total. One is leaving at the end of July, so there will only be 10. Everyone is really nice. There is one guy who is from Berlin, one lady from Canada, one lady from South America (I can't remember exactly where), and everyone is from the states. Only one is a native New Yorker.
We had a tour of the offices, meet everyone, talked with a lot of people, heard a lot of banging (they are putting up a new building right next store and today the inserted the steal beams in the ground), met with our departments, had a group lunch, did some work, had a tour of our gallery, did some more work, had another meeting, and that was the end of the day. There was one tiny hiccup in the day.... at about 4pm someone finally noticed a sign posted on the bathrooms that said our water is going to be turned off all day tomorrow and possible till Friday. The problem? We are hosting an event tomorrow for about 50 people and we need bathrooms! Called management. Hopefully the water will be working again by 5pm for the event.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SHQ_0wZk0kI/AAAAAAAAAF0/UUbYluf2deU/s320/07-08-08_1408.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5220868043607167554" /><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SHQ_-rNiG1I/AAAAAAAAAF8/sdzqi87Sdu8/s320/07-08-08_1409.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5220868214013172562" />
Having our group lunch.

I think I'm really going to like work. I know I am completely prepared as far as the nonprofit side of things, maybe a little too prepared, but I know nothing of the photographers they speak of or the artistic side of modern day photography. A lot of the other interns studied photography as their major, so it is a little intimidating. And I found out I am the closest commuter out of the entire staff. Some people, it takes them an hour and a half. Yuck.
After work I met up with my folks back at my place and we headed to the Yankee's game. It was the 34 game left in the old stadium. We sat in the bleachers. The weather was beautiful. Nice breeze, clear sky. Couldn't have asked for anything better.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SHRAOg48CDI/AAAAAAAAAGE/NP7T-E0bhdo/s320/07-08-08_2047.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5220868486120343602" />
We left after the 7th inning and got something to eat at the 24hr Tick-Tock Diner by my place. After a few pictures, a few tears, and hugs and kisses they headed to their hotel.

Day 11: Last Free Day

It was my last day of vacation and I went to New York City Public library. This was a bad idea since I was heading home to eat dinner....which I didn't, because I was full. However, three hours later I was starving again.
Next I went on the roof to clean up my nails. I didn't want to do it in my room because it was small and I didn't want to do it in one of the public rooms because, well, nail polish remover stinks. So I went on the roof. I was a really beautiful evening and a good hand full of ladies were enjoying it. After spending way too much time online searching for free things to do in New York, I decided I wanted to go for my first NYC run. I live very close to the West Side Hwy next to the Hudson and there is a bike/running trail all along it. Let me tell, this air is much thicker than back home. You think we have smog? Add some humidity and it's intense. A quick two mile run took much long than expect. I also locked my keys in my room. It's a bit embracing to go to the counter and ask for someone to unlock my door.
Had a big lunch (or dinner as it is referred to on Sundays here) then headed off to Madison Ave to bum around while waiting to meet friends. When to dinner with new friend Kerry and Erin then off to Redeemer for night service. I really like the pastor who spoke tonight.
Next was dessert at Serendipity 3 where we met up with other new friend Joanie. For those of you who are unaware, this is the restaurant from the movie Serendipity. Erin had to head home, but the rest of us had 45 mins to kill before we could get a table. Kerry noticed something down the street so we went to check it out..... it was the Roosevelt Island Tramway! This fun 4 min trip takes you 250 feet over the East River.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SHGemkSXLmI/AAAAAAAAAEk/q9gC6jANxBY/s320/07-06-08_2008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5220127828512026210" />
Kerry and Joanie on the Tramway
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SHGkBsutMjI/AAAAAAAAAE0/J52gnjdVPR4/s320/JuneJuly08.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5220133792192999986" />
Kerry and I
So after our lovely ride, we headed back to Serendipity and got seated right away. We ordered a Frozen Hot Chocolate and a peanut butter humble pie sundae. They were SO amazing!!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SHGj4CfM1UI/AAAAAAAAAEs/T36ZD37FcM4/s320/JuneJuly08_3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5220133626234852674" />
Me with a Frozen Hot Chocolate
Walking to the Subway station, we found this very cool and hip place Dylan's Candy Bar. Full of candy that you can purchase and in the windows.....the Project Runway Dresses!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SHGlhnIiWFI/AAAAAAAAAE8/Pk6AM7WocIE/s320/07-06-08_2120.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5220135439958169682" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_gAen-2_4pXs/SHGlwj3w58I/AAAAAAAAAFE/CKQovmsfmmA/s320/07-06-08_2121.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5220135696780552130" />
And lastly I got to come home, talk to a few friends from back home on the phone, and sit and watch some wonderful mindless TV shows. My choice too, no else cared what we watched :) Oh, and my folks gave me some glamorous pearl earrings too. Thanks Mum and Pa!! Love ya!
Was a very blessed wonderful day.

Day 9:

A few days ago I went to Central Park. A word to the wise, if you even download walking tours to your iPod, make sure you pint the map that goes with it. Because when it tells you to take the path to the Alice In Wonderland statue, there aren't always signs and back tracing in Central Park can lead to a lot of extra time you were not planning on spending in the park. I also spend some time reading and taking a nap in front of Belvedere Castle. For lunch I attempted to buy a hot dog and eat on the steps of the MoMA like they do in Hitch, but they are repairing the front entrance and it was all boarded up :(

Two nights ago I went to meet a married couple, friends of a friend. Joanie is a residence hall manager and Ryan works with iron moldings. They are two of the coolest and nicest people! I loved hanging out with them and actually went over to their place last night for the 4th. We had a potluck. Couldn't actually see the fireworks but it was still fun. I also met this totally cool girl named Kerry.

Today started out slow. I had plans but flakiness changed that and I ended up staying home. However, I did meet up with Kerry and two of her friends for lunch. I'm very glad that I am starting to meet some Christian ladies my age. And then when I got home and check my email, I got an awesome surprise. Six of the best friends EVER bought me a 6th month pass for Netflix. Thanks you guys! I also got my first letter in the mail. It's cool to have mail in my little box :)

Randomness:
Saw my first subway rat. It was a big one too.
Wholefoods is BIG here. They are as big as back in Az. Everyone loves WF here.
You can kayak on the Hudson for free.
There is a discount on movies if you go before noon.
After a week, all the tourist get old.

Day 6

Had some fun last night. I went out last night with some American Humanics students. For those who are unaware, American Humanics is what my certification is in. Kenneth, Jamie, and Eila are from Baruch College in the middle of Manhattan. It was fun. We walked around for a bit and grab some grub at Chat ‘n Chew.

Today I went on a walking tour of the financial district downtown. Lindsey gave me this book called NYC Free & Dirt Cheap. It’s pretty darn amazing. The tour went as followed:
Federal Hall National Memorial –First built in 1842 and the drafting of the Bill of Rights, Washington’s inauguration, and the first stirring of rebellion against British authority all happened here.
The Police Museum –This was the First Precinct Station House. Did you know that “Cop” comes from the copper badges police used to wear?
Lovelace Tavern –During the building of the skyscraper a wall was found from 1670.
Fraunces Tavern –Originally built in 1719, but multiple fires have since caused for reconstruction. A lock of George Washington’s hair is here and this is where he gave his farewell speech.
Staten Island Ferry –It’s a free ride, but I shall save that for when someone visits. It’s supposed to give a great view of the city from the water.
Castle Clinton –Also has a portion of its original wall and has free concerts during the summer.
The Sphere –Designed as a symbol of peace, for 30 years it was at the Plaza of the WTC. It survived the towers falling down and now is at the start of Hope Garden in Battery Park. There is a metaphor in there I’m sure.
National Museum of American Indian –Beautiful building with 4 large statues of women representing Asia, America, Europe, and Africa. There are also 12 statues on the top representing seafaring regions. Inside there was actually an exhibit from the Smithsonian and, check it, the Heard Museum! It was way cool.
Trinity Church –Known nationally from National Treasure, this Gothic Revival church was built in 1846.
Saint Paul’s Church –This is the oldest building still occupied in NYC. It’s bright inside and is filled with 9/11 memorials. It became a little overwhelming after 5 mins.
WTC –The building of the new memorial is taking place. It was a mad dash move let me tell you! Signed papers, got key, went upstairs, dumped out all of my luggage, and went to lunch. Then met up with some friends of a friend. We went to Brooklyn to the Botanical Gardens, then back to SoHo to a pub. Of course I was having so much fun I forgot about the clothes covering my bed back at my apartment. So I was up till 1am putting things away.

Today I had my first breakfast and dinner in my apartment complex. It’s funny how everyone sort of just spreads out and sits alone. It’s feels like everyone is the new kid. To sum up the food: refer back to your camp days. Enough said.
I finished unpacking went to B&H and Kmart. There is one two blocks down from me. It’s three levels. I forgot to buy hangers at Target so I need to shop a bit. I also went to church at Redeemer. It was held in a church just West of central park. They had jazz music fro worship. It wasn’t bad, but I think I will try the location East of central park next week. I then went and walked around Riverside Park then over to Natural History museum.

So, I like NYC so far. I still feel like I am just on vacation and I’ll be going home in two weeks. I think once the internship starts it will feel different.

Pictures of place to come.

Day 1: Moving in Progress

It is 1pm here in Newark, NJ. My parents and I flew in early this morning about 4am. We checked into our hotel, ate breakfast, and grabbed some sleep. We are getting ready to venture into the city for some bumming. There are really no plans for today, just relaxing.
Tomorrow I will move into The Webster after 1:30pm and my folks will be off on their two week vacation touring baseball parks of the East.
I've already come to the realization that I forgot somethings at home. I guess that means I need to find a Walmart.... or a corner grocery store? Now, for those who are thinking, how much did she take? I brought four bags. You have to understand, however, that two of the bags weighted 10lbs or more by themselves. So I could fit very little in them. And yes, I brought almost all my shoes.

Graduation

Graduation was wonderful! Today, for the first time, it feels real. I tried on my robe and cap and as I stood there looking in the mirror it all finally hit me. Soon my college career will be over and I will start a real job. Granted it is only an internship, but I will have so many responsibilities and so much will be expected of me. I am no longer a kid going through school, but an adult making real decision that will effect an entire organization. This is also the first time I felt a true sense of the possibility of failure and all the "what ifs" start going through my head. I have no idea what to expect from my time in NYC, but I pray for the best experience I can have.
Lord give me strength, peace, and hopefulness.

The Countdown Has Begun

Today marks the two week countdown till graduation.
